This song is the one that introduced me to Lee Morgan's superior trumpet play many, many years ago. I'll never forget being in a record store in Oak Park, Illinois and searching for a Sinatra album. Anyway, while I was there I struck up a conversation with another customer. He was much older than I was at the time (I was in my late twenties) and we started talking about jazz. At the time, my knowledge of jazz was very limited. I knew the names of famous musicians but I hadn't heard any of their music. I'm ashamed to admit that I lied about knowing how good Duke Ellington's "Black And Tan Fantasy" was. I had never heard it at the time. But I had heard of it and so I tossed out that title to make myself seem more knowledgeable than I actually was. The guy started to quiz me about the music and I had nothing to say other than some vague stuff about how great Duke's playing was. I think the guy knew I was full of it and so he gave me a copy of Coltrane's "Blue Train" that he had been unable to sell back to the record store. This store both sold and bought records to and from anyone who walked in. The store had plenty of copies of Trane's "Blue Train" already so they declined to buy this guy's copy. So he just gave it to me. He was an older white guy and I remember him saying that I needed to know about this music because it was part of the history of my people's experience in this country. Well, I took it home and I immediately fell in love with this particular recording from that album. And I played Lee Morgan's solo over and over again. It led to me investigating Lee Morgan so much more that I became a huge fan of the Jazz Messengers, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Hank Mobley, Miles Davis, and so many other jazz superheroes that I'd be typing all day if I were to list them all. I would be surprised to learn that the guy who started me on that wonderful journey is still alive. I'm much older myself now. I'm probably around the age he was when he gave me the album. But if he is still alive I would want to thank him so much for exposing me to the best music I'll ever hear. And the thing is that I'm still uncovering great music and great musicians from this era and beyond. Each time I come across a musical piece or an album that just blows me away, I feel like I found the most priceless thing. And I guess in a way, I have.

Alice Coltrane and Bennie Maupin went to the same high school in Detroit. Alice was 3 years older and gave Bennie some pointers. John spent a lot of time in Detroit and was a friend of Bennies. Bennie is 84 now.

So here's a good story: When I was in my junior year of high school, I practiced hard for the highschool All-State Jazz Band. I rehearsed sight-reading, modes, and etudes constantly... what I had overlooked to work on was my improvisation. The composition that year was so simple, it was Autumn Leaves. When the results came back, I got 6th in the state for alto saxes... I missed the mark by only two chairs (as All-State has a Jazz I and Jazz II big band with two altos in each). I was so unbelievably devastated... like, genuinely so devastated; I had rehearsed for 4.5 months. The next year, everything was on the line. It was my final year to give it a go. Guess what the song to improv over that year was? Song for My Father. For 4.5 months, I listened ONLY to Song for My Father. I literally only listened to one song for four and a half months. This song, every note, the feel/groove, solos, comping, and head is literally engrained in my memory. I was not going to leave high school knowing I was that close. And guess what happened? """ Judicator Notes (Simplified): ETUDE 1: 46/50 ETUDE 2: 46/50 IMPROV: 80/100 TONE: 42/50 PITCH: 40/50 RHYTHMIC ACCURACY: 46/50 TECHNICAL ACCURACY: 46/50 MUSICALITY: 45/50 STYLISTIC ACCURACY: 42/50 Time/feel was solid! So much energy-love it! Bold, confident style, etudes had energy and fire. Solo was excellent. I'd like to hear more harmonically, but for this tune, it was very appropriate. """ I had placed 2nd best in the entire state and landed in Jazz I alto 2. One of my greatest moments to this day. I'll never forget waiting in the lobby of the audition school for HOURS and finally reading the decisions with my band director. Never, EVER give up on your dreams... sometimes that hard work just takes longer to pay off, whether it takes years to come to fruition.

I listen to this song and solos of Joe Henderson and Horace Silver are mesmerizing. A true jazz classic My father was a singer/crooner of ballads. He sang at parties, albeit the same few songs until the cows came home. They were having fun. Thanks for the memories dad.
